April 09

The last couple of months have consisted of more unpacking, a visit from Drew, Victoria, and Ayla over Easter, and another trip to Blacksburg to gather our remaining things...we finally have some porch furniture to enjoy this awesome spring weather on.  Malayna, Lucinda, and I are spending lots of time in our fun backyard and in the neighbor's yard.  The two random boys in one picture are 2 of the 3 neighbors Malayna plays with nearly every day.

February

We just took our first trip with Lucinda to visit lots of friends in Blacksburg.  It was of course great to see everyone and both girls traveled well.  Malayna stayed in Amalie's room with mostly success and the girls couldn't get enough of each other all weekend.  Lucinda is growing fast!  Our house unpacking/organizing is going slow. We don't do much these days besides unpack, but we're trying to get out and enjoy the weather a little before the heat and bugs are upon us.  Enjoy the pics.

New House

We found out just before Lucinda was born that we needed to find a new house because our landlords were returning early from their foreign assignment.  We have enjoyed our little place, but with the addition of a 4th person, we've officially taken the space beyond it's intention.  I hate to admit it, but we really want more space!  We're upgrading back to a similar space as our Blacksburg house :)  Pics of the new place are attached.  We're very excited about it.  It has lots of character and it's close to our current place, so life shouldn't change too much.  We'll miss the neighbors on our street, but plan to travel the mile to visit them regularly, and will have enough space so that they can come to our house now.  We'll be moving in just a couple weeks, so if a newborn wasn't enough, life will be even more crazy for the next month.

Lucinda's birth

Like everyone else, we are anxious to talk about our kids and their birth.  However, this time around we did much more studying and are motivated to spread the good word on natural child birth to our various friends who might be reproducing in the future.

For our pre-natal care and birth we opted for a midwife practice.  It's a great set-up as they are part of the UNC system.  The delivery occurs at the hospital with docs, meds, and emergency procedures available; however, if all goes well, you only ever deal with the midwives.  The difference was incredible.  Instead of check-ups revolving around tests and potential but unlikely disasters, they instead were concerned with making sure everything was in the range of normalcy and keeping me healthy, because then the birth is more likely to go smoothly and therefore the baby is more likely to have a healthy entrance into the world.

How she made her descent...Mark and I both finished working for the year on Friday December 19.  The following Sunday evening, Dec 21, we were attempting to meet more neighbors by delivering cookies and the contractions started.  Given that Malayna was induced way past her due date, we assumed this would be the same, so we figured the contractions were just brackston-hicks and would go away.  That night I slept, but was woken roughly every hour with contractions.  I got up the following morning and got the day going with Malayna as normal.  About 9am, I realized they were getting more painful and we needed to get our Malayna-accommodations rolling so we could deal with the contractions and decide if it was for real labor.  Fortunately my parents were on their way down that day, so we only had to tap our friends during the day.  Malayna went to one neighbor's for the morning and another for the afternoon and evening.  We really can't thank both families enough for helping us out in this way.

We started timing contractions that morning and they were a little sporadic, painful, but manageable.  The midwives said to call their pager when they got to 5 minutes apart for an hour.  Around noon, we called because they were averaging 5 minutes apart, although some shorter, some longer.  The midwife suggested I hop in the bath and then call back in an hour.  The bath slowed the contractions to about 8-9 minutes apart, so we hung out a little longer than the prescribed hour and then called back.  The midwife let us make the call on coming in.  She didn't want us to show up and be denied, but she also didn't want me to be in transition for the 40 minute drive to the hospital (in Chapel Hill).  When I got out of the shower the contractions sped up.  At some point we figured out that if I laid down the contractions came less often, roughly every 8 minutes, but were more painful, and if I was up and around they came every 3-4 minutes, but with less pain.

We decided this was real labor, we didn't want to deal with rush hour traffic or transition labor in the car, so we headed to the hospital, checking in around 3pm.

At check in time I was at 8cm (out of 10).  We were surprised I was so far along, but executing the various positions we learned in classes, and especially the bath, really helped with the pain management.  At the hospital, we managed to avoid the hep-lock (sticking you to get ready for an IV) and continual monitoring.  Both of these decisions allowed us to just focus on laboring.  As noted earlier, it was much more manageable if I was up and moving around.  Changing positions every few contractions helped a bunch, as did spending a few in the shower.

Having a midwife (actually 2 midwives... there was a resident midwife too, since UNC is a teaching hospital) was great!  We loved our midwife... she was really calm (which was therefore calming), encouraging, and good at setting the mood w/ the lighting.  Believe it or not, this really helped.  Her focus was on the natural birth and well-being.  Our last doctor's focus was on getting home from a long shift and speeding things up.  Another thing they allowed us to do was bring our iPod and a speaker in and play music, which also helped.  Just as it was getting tough, it was time to push.  Being on my hands and knees was the best position at the time to deal with the pain so the midwives encouraged me to stay in that position to push.  With Malayna pushing was a relief from the contractions, but this time it was more difficult (albeit, shorter)...not sure why the difference.  Regardless, neither the transition or pushing phases lasted that long, each about 10 minutes.  Pushing was only delayed by the midwives making sure it went slow enough to avoid tears or cuts, which I'm extremely grateful for now.  As soon as Lucinda was born I was able to hold and nurse her.  She latched on immediately and has been an eating champ since.

So why bother with this natural stuff?  We learned that the various interventions are a vicious cycle.  Once you do one, it's much more likely you'll need another, eventually inhibiting the post-birth process.  For example, if you do continual monitoring, your movement is restricted, when movement is restricted, it much more difficult to deal with the pain, when you can't deal with the pain you end up getting medications, which end up getting into the baby's system and of course mom's system.  The various medications reduce the body's release of hormones which enable the baby to be alert for feeding after delivery and enable you to deal with the pain.  Life is so much easier this time with a baby who learned how to nurse immediately.  My recovery was so fast that they released me the following morning, we just had to wait 24 hours for Lucinda to be discharged.  Aside from the health benefits, the process was a great experience and much more enjoyable than the first time.  With Malayna I didn't have an epidural, but a narcotic (sort of like hopped up motrin) that we swear made Malayna drowsy.  I was also stuck laying in bed the entire time out of my own ignorance as well as continual monitoring and an IV for fluids, which made it very difficult to deal with the pain, hence the narcotics.

To have a natural child birth with a doctor appears to be nearly impossible.  You will be fighting an uphill battle the whole time.  Here's why:  Midwifery is focused on the natural process of pregnancy and childbirth (ie:  things going right) while traditional medicine is obsessed with certain things happening at a certain time (ie:  things going wrong).  Unfortunately, this obsession in the US has lead to one of the worst infant mortality rates in the industrialized world. We highly recommend using a midwife if you can and if you are a good canidate for a natural birth.  Obviously, it may not be or cannot be for everyone.  And things can go wrong - we were grateful for being at a hospital in case they did.  But we really enjoyed the process this time.  Additionally, the fast recovery combined with a baby that nurses well are huge payoffs.

Life w/ Baby, take 2!

It's been an incredible week for us... one that's filled w/ lots of "oh yeah" and deja vu's!  We're a bit rusty on this whole baby thing, but it hasn't taken too long to shake that rust.  We've had an easier time parenting the last few days since Natalie's parents took Malayna with them for a few days.  It's actually been relatively peaceful and calm around here!

Lucinda has been doing great.... eating like a champ (ALL the time!) and sleeping reasonably well at night.  We can't get over how much she looks like Malayna did when she was a baby... I'll try to post some side by side baby shots soon.  In the meantime, there should be some updated pics of Lucinda posted.

Baby update

Healthy baby girl. 7lbs 8.6oz born 7:32pm 12/22. No name yet! Everyone fine.

Labor Update 1

So Natalie is definitely in labor, so this may be the last update until we get to the hospital... which also may be imminent!

Pregnancy & Labor

Here's a link to some of Natalie's pregnancy pictures:

We're hoping to use this blog again to communicate to our family and friends on what's going on with the baby.

As of this morning (Monday, 22nd) Natalie's been having contractions all night.  Last time she went through this it was a false alarm despite the fact the contractions were coming under 10 minutes and lasting over a minute; however, they were kind of weak.  This time they're pretty strong, but not lasting as long and they're kind of all over the place time-wise.  We'll try to keep you posted.

Hope everyone is doing well.. we've been enjoying all the cards and pictures this year!

"Fall" in Raleigh

Since we're attempting to poke our heads out of the sand, I'll try an update post.  "Fall" is in quotes because it's still getting in the 80s. However, we've enjoyed the last couple weeks since the extreme heat has broken and we can actually go outside again.  We've attended three neighborhood pot-lucks.  Two at parks and one block-party.  They are all out: great food, bands, moon-bounce, and this last one had a fire truck and horse.  We even met Mike Connell from The Connells...apparently he's all grown up turned into a lawyer and lives in our neighborhood.  We also have new neighbors as of the start of September and they have been a nice plus in our lives.  They have three girls, twins exactly Malayna's age and a 12-month old.  Malayna loves playing with them and the adults all get along great as well...amazing really.

Last weekend we were back in Blacksburg for homecoming with Mark's core grad school friends.  Everyone has multiplied a few times, so it was a crazy weekend, but we had a great time.  One friend the guys hadn't seen in 8(?) years.  Props to Kevin and Alex for hosting, organizing, and arranging babysitters.  We also visited Sinkland Farms (pumpkin farm) on our way out of town.  We've loved doing this in the past and got all nostalgic going back.  We have taken the same picture of Mark and Malayna on a tractor every year, so maybe I can get him to post the series.

I (Natalie) am working this semester at NC State.  It's been a good experience for all of us.  Mark gets Malayna up and going every morning and as a result they are much closer :).  For these last few months of pregnancy, I've been happy to sit a computer instead of chasing Malayna!  The work is pretty good and I'm happy to be learning some new stuff.  Looks like I might even be able to get a paper out of it all.  We've been thrilled with Malayna's school.  She loves to do art, gymnastics, and ride scooters.  She does an interpretive dance class and I got to witness some "moves" this weekend at the farmer's market band...very cute.   At home, she likes to play pretend life with mostly her cars, sometimes little people, and sometimes other random toys (this weekend it was the single-peg mega blocks that became ducks).  Games, puzzles, and workbook games like mazes and connect the dots, are also high on the activity list right now.  The constant development is a blast for us to both observe and participate in.

Last week we had an ultrasound and the baby is doing well and thankfully still looking like a girl.  We've barely begun the office move, but finally this weekend arranged the living room to accommodate enough office stuff to hopefully squeeze a crib into the current office.  We don't have much planned for the next couple months, so maybe we'll get the move done in time.  However, we're looking forward to having Mark's mom visit, maybe some others who have threatened to visit, and the annual "boo and the beach trip" to the outer banks.

Removing Head from Sand

I guess the frequency of blogging/pics really plummeted after we moved.  Honestly, I thought about punting on this site for a while, but I can't find another site I like that has quick upload speeds and pics/blog integrated so well.  Soo... for the forseeable future we'll stay put.  Sometimes the latest album doesn't come up on the home page and you have to click on the "photos" link.  They may have fixed this.

I added a few new albums to catch everyone up on what we've been up to.  I probably owe you one more to get "current".  Nat's preggers w/ #2 and it's a girl!  Due around Christmas... must run in [my] family!  We're excited.  Malayna is stressed that the baby is going to steal her toys.

We keep adjusting to Raleigh... I (mark) am working out at RTP again so we're even contemplating a move to Durham or Chapel Hill next spring.  We'll try to keep you posted.  Enjoy the new pics.

We're back!

Sorry for the long haidus on pictures and blogging.  The move to Raleigh was a lot harder than we expected and quite frankly, we weren't all that excited to blog, take pictures, or much of that.  But things are a lot better now as we're getting settled in to the new area and trying to make decisions on the future.  We miss all of our Blacksburg friends very much but remind you all that Raleigh is but a short 3.5 hours away! :)  We hope to make it to the beach and lakes (now that they're back) a lot more this year.  I (mark) am enjoying my job a lot and have met some great new friends and reconnected w/ some old ones.  We've gotten to see a lot of our old friends from our past life here, which has been great.

Enjoy the pictures... I'll add some more in the next few weeks hopefully.

The Decision is...

Raleigh, NC!  Again!   We're excited to be heading back to the "town" where we met and where we have many good friends.  A great opportunity came up for Natalie take a research job and for Mark to go to work with some former coworkers.  It was a really tough choice for us since we had a couple other really great opportunities, but we're happy to be going back and look forward to settling back in.  We've been preparing for a possible move for a while now, but we still feel overwhelmed at the prospect of it... it gets harder the older we get and the larger our family becomes.  But we're sure it will work out.  We're glad to be relatively close to Blacksburg and hope to visit our friends here often.  Change is really difficult for us and we will miss Blacksburg a lot.  Someday, I may have to write an entry or two about our lives here and what an incredible and life-changing experience it has been.  We may have lost touch w/ some of our Raleigh friends, so if you're one of those friends, drop us a line and lets get together soon!

Summer Fun

Thanks to everyone who's been asking about our lives.  We're having a great summer - spending a lot of time with Malayna and several weeks at the beach, thanks to Natalie's parents who live there!  The search for the next chapter continues and we hope to have some news soon.   Malayna is going through a growth and talking spurt and we're really enjoying all her changes.  She loves the beach and really loved Wonderland (amusement park on the boardwalk) and ice cream!  She seemed OK eating Mack & Manco's for lunch most days while Natalie and I traded off surfing time.  Speaking of surfing, we're both getting better and getting some time on the boards.  Natalie bought a new longboard and I broke mine (it was a storage incident, not a surfing one, unfortunately!).  Thankfully, mine is fixed and should be ready to go by the time Joe's bachelor weekend of surf rolls around!

I'm going to start posting new albums over the next week or so to the right...  enjoy!

Malayna Update

I'm making up for a short break in Malayna pics.  She's 22 months now and doing wonderful.  She's starting to speak in sentences (slightly broken ones) and she's always learning new words.  She's really into books.  She gets a favorite and latches on for a few weeks and then moves on to a new one... "New book!".  She comes back to the better ones!  We've been going to the library a lot.

One of my favorite new phrases of hers is "No This"!   She uses it to point out things she doesn't like but doesn't know the name for.  For example, if you put some new food on her plate she doesn't want to try.

She's spending a lot of time playing at a neighbor's house these days.  She's 6, but they get along great.  Malayna is always saying her name and the name of her friends at day care when she's with us.

Fun times!

More Details from Us

Thanks to all our friends and family who have checked our blog, called or emailed to check in on us.  As you can imagine, it's been a shocking and sad time here and we are all still reeling from this tragedy.  As new parents, our hearts most of all go out to these 30 or so sets of parents that have had their lives ripped apart and their kids taken away so quickly.

We do not directly know any of the victims (that we know of) of the shootings, but we are beginning to find out that some of them were friends of friends or people we knew.  One victim in particular that I (mark) feel "close" to is Reema Samaha.  She was Lebanese and a member of a group on campus called "Cedars of Lebanon", as are many of our Lebanese friends in town.  We did not know her personally, but she was a friend of other friends in that group and we watched her perform some dances at the International Fair on Sunday.  I was really moved by her dad's interview on CNN... check out this link and click on the video link:  http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/virginiatech.shootings/victims/profiles/reema.samaha.html

Some people have asked about us and where we were, so I thought I'd recount our story here.  Over the weekend, there was a bomb threat that closed Natalie's building, Durham Hall.  On Monday morning, Natalie wondered if she should check the website, but figured it would be open, so she didn't.  At about 8:40 am, she headed to campus.  I stayed home w/ Malayna and got her ready for daycare.  When we got out to the daycare center at about 9:45 am, the owner let us in and told us that they were on lock down.  There had been a shooting at VT "earlier in the morning" at West AJ, on the other side of the drillfield.  He informed me that VT was in lock-down, too (although they really were not at that time).  My initial thought was to contact Natalie, but I knew she was teaching a class in McBryde hall... I didn't want to disturb her and figured that since campus was locked down she'd be fine.  (McBryde is building #151 on this map.  Norris Hall, where most of the victims were located, is #132.  130 and 132 are actually one physical building). I then headed home to turn on the news and get more details.  A few minutes later, as some reports of police in the Burruss Hall area surfaced, I decided to at least text her.  I sent a message:  "Are you OK?  Gunman on campus."  She replied "Yes", so I thought she was fine (and she was, at that time out of harm's way).

What I didn't know is that Natalie had let her class out about 10 minutes early at 9:45am.  She had then walked over to Durham hall to drop off her laptop and head over to a coffee shop.  It wasn't until she got to the coffee shop after 10am that she heard that campus was in lockdown due to a shooting in West AJ.  (Although at this time, there had already been a shooting in Norris Hall at ~9:40-9:45am).  She quickly ran back to her office to get her laptop ("like a true academic!" observed my cousin Laura) and found students there waiting for her... she brought them back to the coffee shop off campus.  At that point, she and I talked and decided to leave Malayna at Daycare but for me to come pick up Natalie and bring her home.  The situation for us was not that scary while it happened, but as we figured out the details and realized how close Natalie had been to harm's way, that's when it really hit us.  What if this guy had wandered into McBryde instead of Norris?  What if he had walked outside instead of killing himself?  It's hard to even think about such questions.  We thank God for keeping us safe and pray for the victims and their families.

Natalie and I attended the convocation w/ about 10-15,000 people that had spilled over into Lane Stadium.  For those that missed it, here's all you need to see:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cSuidxE8os

We also went to the candlelight vigil last night.  It was really a beautiful and moving scene.  It's wierd having all this national attention and press around, but I'm glad this is being documented.  It helps the healing process for me.  I apologize to myself and all my Blacksburg friends, but I finally brought out my camera last night (there's been an overabundance of photographers running around...) and I'll post a few pics of that.

Shootings at Virginia Tech

So there was a shooting spree on Virginia Tech's campus this morning and we just wanted to let everyone know that Natalie, Malyana, and I are OK.  So far we don't know if anyone we know was among those killed or injured.  We'll keep you posted.

Spring

Spring certainly showed up here this past week.  One week it was 30's and 40's and the next week it's 70's and 80's!  We had a great spring break trip up to DC and NJ to see family.  Nat and I also got away for about 4 days to Killington, VT while Malayna had a blast with the grandparents!  (See the picture of the big blow-up bear toy, and you'll get a sense of her week!)  Natalie and I didn't bother taking pictures in Vermont... it was too cold to do anything besides snowboard and eat!  Our first day, the temperature was -16 F and the wind was blowing 20-30mph.  It was cold, but surprisingly bearable.  I guess my technical gear has come a long way since the Jr. High days of skiing with long johns and jeans!

Malayna is doing great!  Her cognitive development is still happening in leaps and bounds.  It's not as obvious as the first 9 months (which were mostly physical), but we'll try to do a better job at paying attention to the little things.  This past week, her ability to use 2 words together to identify something seems to have taken off.  It's not just "ball" or "purple"... it's now "purple ball".  She can pretty much identify most colors these days, when she's paying attention.  I think she likes to say "Green" and "Purple" because those are the 2 she uses the most (whether or not the object is ACTUALLY green or purple!).  She is still getting bigger and stronger.  I feel like she's really tall... and she runs all over the place - really well, I might add.  Stairs of varying sizes don't really get in the way.

It looks like I (Mark) am going to be looking for a new job soon, so that opens up some doors for Natalie.   It also means that we may be looking to move.  Kindof an exciting and scary time all at once right now.  We'll keep you posted on what happens.  For now, Natalie needs to finish out her contract and we're hoping to enjoy the rest of spring right here in Blacksburg.

Holidaze

Lots of new photo albums to the right, including 3 travel albums that came out of one long 'round the world trip:  My (Mark's) family in DC & Baltimore, Christmas w/ Nat's fam in OCNJ, and our annual OBX trip at new years.  Great to see all the family and friends, especially Gus & Laura and the Flynn-Stanislaw clan who we haven't seen in a while.  OBX was great fun starting with the trip down.  We opted to take the Cape May ferry across the Delaware bay and come down the eastern shore.  This cut about 2 hours off our trip and a lot of aggravation w/ the I-95 corridore.  The eastern shore was really pretty and travel by ferry is AWESOME with a kid, let me tell you!  The Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel was cool to see from that angle after years of seeing it from land at Seashore State campground.  We already miss our new friends made at the beach, but I'll have to just relive the memories by playing my new favorite playstation game:  Guitar Hero!  Phil, you of all people would get a kick out of this... gotta check it out!
