Baby update

Healthy baby girl. 7lbs 8.6oz born 7:32pm 12/22. No name yet! Everyone fine.

Labor Update 1

So Natalie is definitely in labor, so this may be the last update until we get to the hospital... which also may be imminent!

Pregnancy & Labor

Here's a link to some of Natalie's pregnancy pictures:

We're hoping to use this blog again to communicate to our family and friends on what's going on with the baby.

As of this morning (Monday, 22nd) Natalie's been having contractions all night.  Last time she went through this it was a false alarm despite the fact the contractions were coming under 10 minutes and lasting over a minute; however, they were kind of weak.  This time they're pretty strong, but not lasting as long and they're kind of all over the place time-wise.  We'll try to keep you posted.

Hope everyone is doing well.. we've been enjoying all the cards and pictures this year!

"Fall" in Raleigh

Since we're attempting to poke our heads out of the sand, I'll try an update post.  "Fall" is in quotes because it's still getting in the 80s. However, we've enjoyed the last couple weeks since the extreme heat has broken and we can actually go outside again.  We've attended three neighborhood pot-lucks.  Two at parks and one block-party.  They are all out: great food, bands, moon-bounce, and this last one had a fire truck and horse.  We even met Mike Connell from The Connells...apparently he's all grown up turned into a lawyer and lives in our neighborhood.  We also have new neighbors as of the start of September and they have been a nice plus in our lives.  They have three girls, twins exactly Malayna's age and a 12-month old.  Malayna loves playing with them and the adults all get along great as well...amazing really.

Last weekend we were back in Blacksburg for homecoming with Mark's core grad school friends.  Everyone has multiplied a few times, so it was a crazy weekend, but we had a great time.  One friend the guys hadn't seen in 8(?) years.  Props to Kevin and Alex for hosting, organizing, and arranging babysitters.  We also visited Sinkland Farms (pumpkin farm) on our way out of town.  We've loved doing this in the past and got all nostalgic going back.  We have taken the same picture of Mark and Malayna on a tractor every year, so maybe I can get him to post the series.

I (Natalie) am working this semester at NC State.  It's been a good experience for all of us.  Mark gets Malayna up and going every morning and as a result they are much closer :).  For these last few months of pregnancy, I've been happy to sit a computer instead of chasing Malayna!  The work is pretty good and I'm happy to be learning some new stuff.  Looks like I might even be able to get a paper out of it all.  We've been thrilled with Malayna's school.  She loves to do art, gymnastics, and ride scooters.  She does an interpretive dance class and I got to witness some "moves" this weekend at the farmer's market band...very cute.   At home, she likes to play pretend life with mostly her cars, sometimes little people, and sometimes other random toys (this weekend it was the single-peg mega blocks that became ducks).  Games, puzzles, and workbook games like mazes and connect the dots, are also high on the activity list right now.  The constant development is a blast for us to both observe and participate in.

Last week we had an ultrasound and the baby is doing well and thankfully still looking like a girl.  We've barely begun the office move, but finally this weekend arranged the living room to accommodate enough office stuff to hopefully squeeze a crib into the current office.  We don't have much planned for the next couple months, so maybe we'll get the move done in time.  However, we're looking forward to having Mark's mom visit, maybe some others who have threatened to visit, and the annual "boo and the beach trip" to the outer banks.

Removing Head from Sand

I guess the frequency of blogging/pics really plummeted after we moved.  Honestly, I thought about punting on this site for a while, but I can't find another site I like that has quick upload speeds and pics/blog integrated so well.  Soo... for the forseeable future we'll stay put.  Sometimes the latest album doesn't come up on the home page and you have to click on the "photos" link.  They may have fixed this.

I added a few new albums to catch everyone up on what we've been up to.  I probably owe you one more to get "current".  Nat's preggers w/ #2 and it's a girl!  Due around Christmas... must run in [my] family!  We're excited.  Malayna is stressed that the baby is going to steal her toys.

We keep adjusting to Raleigh... I (mark) am working out at RTP again so we're even contemplating a move to Durham or Chapel Hill next spring.  We'll try to keep you posted.  Enjoy the new pics.

We're back!

Sorry for the long haidus on pictures and blogging.  The move to Raleigh was a lot harder than we expected and quite frankly, we weren't all that excited to blog, take pictures, or much of that.  But things are a lot better now as we're getting settled in to the new area and trying to make decisions on the future.  We miss all of our Blacksburg friends very much but remind you all that Raleigh is but a short 3.5 hours away! :)  We hope to make it to the beach and lakes (now that they're back) a lot more this year.  I (mark) am enjoying my job a lot and have met some great new friends and reconnected w/ some old ones.  We've gotten to see a lot of our old friends from our past life here, which has been great.

Enjoy the pictures... I'll add some more in the next few weeks hopefully.

The Decision is...

Raleigh, NC!  Again!   We're excited to be heading back to the "town" where we met and where we have many good friends.  A great opportunity came up for Natalie take a research job and for Mark to go to work with some former coworkers.  It was a really tough choice for us since we had a couple other really great opportunities, but we're happy to be going back and look forward to settling back in.  We've been preparing for a possible move for a while now, but we still feel overwhelmed at the prospect of it... it gets harder the older we get and the larger our family becomes.  But we're sure it will work out.  We're glad to be relatively close to Blacksburg and hope to visit our friends here often.  Change is really difficult for us and we will miss Blacksburg a lot.  Someday, I may have to write an entry or two about our lives here and what an incredible and life-changing experience it has been.  We may have lost touch w/ some of our Raleigh friends, so if you're one of those friends, drop us a line and lets get together soon!

Summer Fun

Thanks to everyone who's been asking about our lives.  We're having a great summer - spending a lot of time with Malayna and several weeks at the beach, thanks to Natalie's parents who live there!  The search for the next chapter continues and we hope to have some news soon.   Malayna is going through a growth and talking spurt and we're really enjoying all her changes.  She loves the beach and really loved Wonderland (amusement park on the boardwalk) and ice cream!  She seemed OK eating Mack & Manco's for lunch most days while Natalie and I traded off surfing time.  Speaking of surfing, we're both getting better and getting some time on the boards.  Natalie bought a new longboard and I broke mine (it was a storage incident, not a surfing one, unfortunately!).  Thankfully, mine is fixed and should be ready to go by the time Joe's bachelor weekend of surf rolls around!

I'm going to start posting new albums over the next week or so to the right...  enjoy!

Malayna Update

I'm making up for a short break in Malayna pics.  She's 22 months now and doing wonderful.  She's starting to speak in sentences (slightly broken ones) and she's always learning new words.  She's really into books.  She gets a favorite and latches on for a few weeks and then moves on to a new one... "New book!".  She comes back to the better ones!  We've been going to the library a lot.

One of my favorite new phrases of hers is "No This"!   She uses it to point out things she doesn't like but doesn't know the name for.  For example, if you put some new food on her plate she doesn't want to try.

She's spending a lot of time playing at a neighbor's house these days.  She's 6, but they get along great.  Malayna is always saying her name and the name of her friends at day care when she's with us.

Fun times!

More Details from Us

Thanks to all our friends and family who have checked our blog, called or emailed to check in on us.  As you can imagine, it's been a shocking and sad time here and we are all still reeling from this tragedy.  As new parents, our hearts most of all go out to these 30 or so sets of parents that have had their lives ripped apart and their kids taken away so quickly.

We do not directly know any of the victims (that we know of) of the shootings, but we are beginning to find out that some of them were friends of friends or people we knew.  One victim in particular that I (mark) feel "close" to is Reema Samaha.  She was Lebanese and a member of a group on campus called "Cedars of Lebanon", as are many of our Lebanese friends in town.  We did not know her personally, but she was a friend of other friends in that group and we watched her perform some dances at the International Fair on Sunday.  I was really moved by her dad's interview on CNN... check out this link and click on the video link:  http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/virginiatech.shootings/victims/profiles/reema.samaha.html

Some people have asked about us and where we were, so I thought I'd recount our story here.  Over the weekend, there was a bomb threat that closed Natalie's building, Durham Hall.  On Monday morning, Natalie wondered if she should check the website, but figured it would be open, so she didn't.  At about 8:40 am, she headed to campus.  I stayed home w/ Malayna and got her ready for daycare.  When we got out to the daycare center at about 9:45 am, the owner let us in and told us that they were on lock down.  There had been a shooting at VT "earlier in the morning" at West AJ, on the other side of the drillfield.  He informed me that VT was in lock-down, too (although they really were not at that time).  My initial thought was to contact Natalie, but I knew she was teaching a class in McBryde hall... I didn't want to disturb her and figured that since campus was locked down she'd be fine.  (McBryde is building #151 on this map.  Norris Hall, where most of the victims were located, is #132.  130 and 132 are actually one physical building). I then headed home to turn on the news and get more details.  A few minutes later, as some reports of police in the Burruss Hall area surfaced, I decided to at least text her.  I sent a message:  "Are you OK?  Gunman on campus."  She replied "Yes", so I thought she was fine (and she was, at that time out of harm's way).

What I didn't know is that Natalie had let her class out about 10 minutes early at 9:45am.  She had then walked over to Durham hall to drop off her laptop and head over to a coffee shop.  It wasn't until she got to the coffee shop after 10am that she heard that campus was in lockdown due to a shooting in West AJ.  (Although at this time, there had already been a shooting in Norris Hall at ~9:40-9:45am).  She quickly ran back to her office to get her laptop ("like a true academic!" observed my cousin Laura) and found students there waiting for her... she brought them back to the coffee shop off campus.  At that point, she and I talked and decided to leave Malayna at Daycare but for me to come pick up Natalie and bring her home.  The situation for us was not that scary while it happened, but as we figured out the details and realized how close Natalie had been to harm's way, that's when it really hit us.  What if this guy had wandered into McBryde instead of Norris?  What if he had walked outside instead of killing himself?  It's hard to even think about such questions.  We thank God for keeping us safe and pray for the victims and their families.

Natalie and I attended the convocation w/ about 10-15,000 people that had spilled over into Lane Stadium.  For those that missed it, here's all you need to see:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cSuidxE8os

We also went to the candlelight vigil last night.  It was really a beautiful and moving scene.  It's wierd having all this national attention and press around, but I'm glad this is being documented.  It helps the healing process for me.  I apologize to myself and all my Blacksburg friends, but I finally brought out my camera last night (there's been an overabundance of photographers running around...) and I'll post a few pics of that.

Shootings at Virginia Tech

So there was a shooting spree on Virginia Tech's campus this morning and we just wanted to let everyone know that Natalie, Malyana, and I are OK.  So far we don't know if anyone we know was among those killed or injured.  We'll keep you posted.

Spring

Spring certainly showed up here this past week.  One week it was 30's and 40's and the next week it's 70's and 80's!  We had a great spring break trip up to DC and NJ to see family.  Nat and I also got away for about 4 days to Killington, VT while Malayna had a blast with the grandparents!  (See the picture of the big blow-up bear toy, and you'll get a sense of her week!)  Natalie and I didn't bother taking pictures in Vermont... it was too cold to do anything besides snowboard and eat!  Our first day, the temperature was -16 F and the wind was blowing 20-30mph.  It was cold, but surprisingly bearable.  I guess my technical gear has come a long way since the Jr. High days of skiing with long johns and jeans!

Malayna is doing great!  Her cognitive development is still happening in leaps and bounds.  It's not as obvious as the first 9 months (which were mostly physical), but we'll try to do a better job at paying attention to the little things.  This past week, her ability to use 2 words together to identify something seems to have taken off.  It's not just "ball" or "purple"... it's now "purple ball".  She can pretty much identify most colors these days, when she's paying attention.  I think she likes to say "Green" and "Purple" because those are the 2 she uses the most (whether or not the object is ACTUALLY green or purple!).  She is still getting bigger and stronger.  I feel like she's really tall... and she runs all over the place - really well, I might add.  Stairs of varying sizes don't really get in the way.

It looks like I (Mark) am going to be looking for a new job soon, so that opens up some doors for Natalie.   It also means that we may be looking to move.  Kindof an exciting and scary time all at once right now.  We'll keep you posted on what happens.  For now, Natalie needs to finish out her contract and we're hoping to enjoy the rest of spring right here in Blacksburg.

Holidaze

Lots of new photo albums to the right, including 3 travel albums that came out of one long 'round the world trip:  My (Mark's) family in DC & Baltimore, Christmas w/ Nat's fam in OCNJ, and our annual OBX trip at new years.  Great to see all the family and friends, especially Gus & Laura and the Flynn-Stanislaw clan who we haven't seen in a while.  OBX was great fun starting with the trip down.  We opted to take the Cape May ferry across the Delaware bay and come down the eastern shore.  This cut about 2 hours off our trip and a lot of aggravation w/ the I-95 corridore.  The eastern shore was really pretty and travel by ferry is AWESOME with a kid, let me tell you!  The Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel was cool to see from that angle after years of seeing it from land at Seashore State campground.  We already miss our new friends made at the beach, but I'll have to just relive the memories by playing my new favorite playstation game:  Guitar Hero!  Phil, you of all people would get a kick out of this... gotta check it out!

Thanksgiving Week

Lots of new pictures for everyone! Tree trimming, thanksgiving, and mexico city.

We always hear of people bartering around town and we finally got to partake. Mark shot Sam and Heather's wedding and Sam trimmed our trees. We were fascinated and grateful. A few action shots are posted.

VT gets the whole week of Thanksgiving off and Drew and Victoria's school also had the week off. We took advantage of this and headed to Mexico City for the first half of the week. We didn't know what to expect, but the city is very nice. It feels european with interesting variations like super well-kept parks, colorful buildings, and decorative touches everywhere, on doors, buildings, street signs, etc. There is a urban center like any major city with upscale restaurants and stores. D & V's neighborhood is close by but has more architectural flairs to it. We also visited the historic downtown with a a sqare, cathedral, and parliment, and Aztec pyramids just outside the city. Drew drove us around and although different, really not as crazy as I anticipated. Drew and Victoria's place is super hot (not temperature hot though). It has lots of concrete accents, high ceilings, a glass tower, and beautiful light. Mark wants it for a studio because of it's amazing light and clean lines! You can see pictures of the dining and living areas as well as from the outside. D & V took us to lots of amazing restaurants that provided a nice variety of Mexican food. We veared once and ate sushi, but even that had a mexican flare with Mango and Banana. Tuesday my (Natalie) parents came down and we had a yummy thanksgiving dinner, complete with pablano pepper soup. Malayna chowed during our trip, in particual she loved the many different soups. We may need to incorporate some Mexcian cooking into our repetoire.

The second half of the week and Thanksgiving proper we spent with Mark's family. Thursday was another great Thanksgiving dinner, with tons of dishes, including everyone's favorites and the seasonal special pumpkin kibbeh. We experienced the Friday shopping craziness while Teta watched BOTH kids! One evening was spent cleaning out the living and dining room in anticipation of new floors and Mark and Phil learned the proper way to roll and store wool rugs. Little Samuel isn't so little anymore, but lots of fun. He is a happy guy full of grins and giggles and interacting a lot now.

Feverish

It's been an exciting couple of weeks here in Blacksburg.  I think maybe it wasn't meant for us to travel this month...  Malayna came down with a fever exactly 10 days after her first MMR shot (as expected) but it lasted for 4 days and we had to cancel our OBX trip.  My (Mark's) mom came down to help out and on the morning she was leaving, she got sick and got checked into the hospital for several days.  Needless to say, we had to rearrange our Williamsburg trip... Oh well!  Happy to report that both Malayna and my mom are doing fine and we enjoyed relaxing at home and spending more time together.

Malayna is turning 16 months this weekend and she's really at a fun stage right now.  She's learning words and how to communicate and she's usually in a really good mood.  She's so much fun to play with and getting cuter than ever, in MY humble opinion!  Enjoy all the pics.

Kitboarding take 2

We had a great trip to Hatteras last weekend.  I'm sure there will be pictures relatively soon.  On the way down we spent the night at the RRR Ranch and got to see all the latest improvements, of which there are many including a new girls "cabin" complex.  We're hoping to get down there and help out with some the construction this fall.  The trip home highlight was a rest stop in Raleigh and meeting the youngest Curry, Ausley Claire.  All three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Malayna played like crazy on the beach and in the water.  Maybe next summer she'll be asking to go to the beach so much we will just HAVE to make more trips!  All weekend we had amazing weather and great wind.  The waves unfortunately were too good for our surfing skills, but we witnessed some terrific rides.  Saturday we spent attempting kiteboarding.  Our gracious friends let us crash their place, use all their equipment, and even take up their time with unofficial lessons.  This sport is crazy.  It's a much bigger thrill than anything else we do because the possibility always exists that a gust takes you flying.  We are still at the beginning stages and spent the day "body-dragging," which sounds a bit morbid I know.  Basically, instead of worry about the board, you just fly the kite and let it drag you through the water.   Really, it's fun!  The next trip will include the board lesson, at which point, we'll draw a final conclusion on the kite-boarding future of the chewies.  All in all, it felt so good to be on the outer banks and at the ocean.

Malayna Update - 14 months

New pictures of Malayna are posted...  She's babling a lot more these days and says a lot of "words"... She loves going up and down stairs; loves putting on hats; she's able to feed herself with a spoon; she's completely addicted to swinging;  she loves balls;  loves singing songs, especially ones with motions; loves pushing buttons to have toys sing to her...  She's full on running and seems pretty coordinated considering the relatively few falls.  She's into sitting in chairs and couches and she has a sign for it - she just pats wherever she wants to sit.  It's cute when she wants to sit on your knee!  Bedtime is full of stories these days, and she's really into all her books.  We keep finding cute new outfits to dress her in, thanks to all of you!  And one of our favorite purchases for her recently has been the pink chucks (All-stars sneakers)!  She likes them, too, but she's biased - she loves ALL shoes!  Putting shoes (or socks) on and taking them off is a favorite activity now, as a few of the pictures demonstrate.  Enjoy!

Pictures and Parenthood

The latest "cellphone pix" to the right are old pictures of Malayna off of my cellphone.  They've been enhance in photoshop, but still not the quality you're used to on this blog...  They were fun pics, tho.

Malayna continues to do great and we are loving being parents and, of course, think she completely rocks!  She's definately communicating better these days and knows some words.  She's got "uh-oh" down very well (for pretty much anything on the floor!), and her word for dog is basically a dog barking sound "row-row!"  She signs a bunch of things:  all done, water, more, yogurt, and her favorite is shoes, which she is now starting to say "shooo".  She also says "Hiiiiieeee" when you walk into the room or she sees you for the first time.  During bathtime she's getting proficient at using the squirting toys, which is pretty funny.  She still Looooves to be chased and loves to hide.  She's always demanding to go outside to play.  Her eczema seems to be mostly gone - it went away when we cut out Cheerios and oat cereal... go figure.  Her hair keeps getting longer and she's got curls that range from big to small depending on the time of day and the prevailing humidity!  Hope you're enjoying the pictures of her growing up.

Also on the right are pictures of our Bay trip a few weeks ago to the Cabana - I'm playing w/ some more Cecil County shots that I'll post soon as well.
